Innovative Methods for Cataract Diagnosis at the Ophthalmology Clinic

25 Feb 2017

Cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, a condition most commonly seen in elderly patients due to the natural aging process (senile cataract).

It is crucial to have regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist to detect cataracts at an early stage.

The first symptom is usually a decrease in visual acuity, but complaints may vary depending on the intensity and location of the opacity. Small opacities may not affect vision, while more extensive, especially centrally located, opacities cause significant visual impairment. In advanced cases, when the entire lens is opaque, the eye completely loses functional vision, though light perception remains.

Diagnosing cataract can be challenging. Pronounced lens opacities often make it difficult, sometimes impossible, to examine the vitreous body or retina with standard methods, requiring additional specialized diagnostic tools.

At the Cataract Diagnosis Unit, the following methods are applied:

1. Standard methods:

  • visual acuity testing (visometry)
  • visual field testing (perimetry)
  • intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry)
  • slit-lamp examination (biomicroscopy)
  • ophthalmoscopy

2. Mandatory additional methods:

  • refractometry
  • ophthalmometry
  • measurement of the anterior-posterior axis of the eye (A-scan ultrasound)

3. Additional methods (as indicated):

  • ultrasound in B-mode
  • ultrasound biomicroscopy
  • endothelial biomicroscopy

4. Laboratory tests (as part of pre-hospitalization evaluation).

  • The unit also provides:
  • precise intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation,
  • selection of multifocal lenses for excellent near and distance vision,
  • endothelial cell count.

Thanks to the advanced equipment and expertise of specialists at Nairi MC, cataracts can be removed even in the most complex cases, including mature (hard) and traumatic cataracts, lens dislocation, corneal dystrophy, diabetes, and other associated conditions.

The only truly effective treatment for cataract is surgical removal of the clouded lens and its replacement with an artificial one.
