Surgical Treatment of Retinal Pathologies at the Ophthalmology Clinic

23 Mar 2017

The retina is the foundation of the visual system. Retinal diseases may manifest with symptoms such as sudden flashes of light resembling lightning, image distortion, difficulty reading, micropsia and macropsia, decreased visual acuity, worsening vision at night, and more.

All retinal diseases develop painlessly.

Vitreoretinal surgery is one of the most important branches of ophthalmology, dealing with the surgical treatment of various pathologies of the retina and vitreous body. When pathological changes occur in the retina, immediate intervention is required. These surgeries demand high medical expertise and state-of-the-art equipment.

Modern surgeries are performed without sutures, using fine microsurgical instruments, which minimizes the risk of postoperative complications and enables patients to return to everyday life as quickly as possible.

At the Ophthalmology Clinic of Nairi Medical Center, successful treatment is provided for a wide range of retinal conditions, including:

  • retinal detachment
  • retinal tears
  • proliferative diabetic retinopathy (a diabetes-related eye complication)
  • vitreous opacities
  • vitreous hemorrhage (hemophthalmus)
  • eye injuries
  • Marfan syndrome
  • lens diaphragm suturing

In vitrectomy procedures, the vitreous body is replaced with artificial substitutes such as:

  • balanced saline solutions, which gradually dissolve and are replaced by natural intraocular fluid,
  • gas,
  • silicone oils of varying viscosity, which may remain in the vitreous cavity for several years.

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia and lasts 30–90 minutes.

Postoperative vision recovery depends on the transparency of the eye’s optical media as well as the condition of the optic nerve and retina.
