Diagnosis of Retinal Pathologies at the Ophthalmology Clinic
Retinal pathologies may develop in the context of various systemic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, kidney and adrenal disorders, as well as eye and cranial trauma or tumors. Certain infectious diseases (such as influenza) can also lead to retinal complications.
The main retinal diseases include: hypertensive retinopathy, retinal tumors, retinal angiopathy, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and macular dystrophy.
High-risk groups include:
- people with moderate or high myopia,
- pregnant women,
- patients with diabetes mellitus.
Any changes in retinal structure can affect vision. At early stages, these diseases usually progress unnoticed and can only be detected through comprehensive examination.
At Nairi Medical Center’s Ophthalmology Clinic, all necessary modern diagnostic tests for retinal pathologies are carried out using advanced technologies and equipment, followed by appropriate treatment.
Diagnostic methods include visual acuity testing (visometry) and retinal examination using specialized fundus lenses.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) makes it possible to detect pathological processes at the earliest stages, before they are clinically visible.
If needed, fluorescein angiography (FA) is performed to determine the actual size of visible and hidden lesions and to establish the optimal treatment and monitoring strategy.
FA is indicated for:
- early detection of hidden retinal changes in diabetes,
- identifying hidden neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration,
- differentiating benign from malignant tumors of the choroid,
- vascular occlusions (thrombosis or blockage of the central retinal vein and its branches),
- central chorioretinitis to identify leakage points and plan laser treatment.
Diagnostic services provided include:
- fluorescein angiography of the fundus,
- fundus photography and autofluorescence (Zeiss Fundus camera),
- retinal layer imaging (OCT),
- ocular ultrasound (B-scan),
- axial length measurement (A-scan).
