Elena Shilina, a 38-year-old Russian citizen, was diagnosed with an intervertebral disc herniation. She turned to Nairi Medical Center, where, under the leadership of Dr. Arman Hakobyan, Head of the Endoscopic Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery Service, an endoscopic surgery was successfully performed.
Elena Shilina:
“My name is Lena, I’m 38 years old. For many years, I had spinal problems — pain in the lumbar region. At first, the pain was tolerable, but later it became more severe and radiated to my left leg, which eventually went numb. I chose Nairi Medical Center based on online reviews, as well as recommendations from my friends, who said that every patient here receives individual care and that wonderful specialists work at this hospital, true experts in their field.
I underwent surgery, and the pain that tormented me before is now gone. The very next day, I was already walking and moving independently, and I was able to go home. A month has passed since the operation, and I can say that I no longer feel pain. Everything is gone, my movements are free, I walk without fear, and I can turn in any direction. Everything is great!
I am truly glad that I entrusted my health to the professional team at Nairi Medical Center. I would like to thank my surgeon, Dr. Arman Pargevich, and the entire staff of the department. They are very kind people who treated me like a member of their own family.”
Dr. Arman Hakobyan, Head of the Endoscopic Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery Service at Nairi Medical Center:
“Today, intervertebral disc herniation is one of the most common pathologies. We perform 2–3 such surgeries per day. These operations are carried out endoscopically — it is a closed and minimally invasive intervention in which the hernia is removed through a small incision. In 98% of cases, patients are discharged the very next day. The procedure takes no more than 40 minutes, and hospital stay does not exceed one day.
An innovative approach is also the unilateral transpedicular fixation performed after hernia removal. Why is this necessary? In 7–10% of cases, there is a risk of recurrence. To eliminate this risk, we perform transpedicular fixation at the end of the operation, which practically rules out the possibility of recurrence.
Endoscopic surgeries have been performed here since 2007, and their number already exceeds 1,000. I would like to thank our patient for her trust and note that in this particular case, the surgery included transpedicular fixation, which allowed her to return to everyday life immediately after the intervention.”
