“Coxa–Nairi” Clinic — New Opportunities for Orthopedics in Armenia

15 Dec 2016

In March 2016, Nairi Medical Center, in collaboration with the Finnish orthopedic clinic Coxa, established the Coxa–Nairi Clinic, with the aim of introducing global advances in joint replacement surgery to Armenia.

According to international statistics, about one-third of the world’s population suffers from musculoskeletal disorders. Among them, joint diseases are the leading cause of disability and loss of mobility.

In cooperation with leading Finnish specialists, Coxa–Nairi Clinic performs hip and knee joint replacement surgeries as well as revision procedures—reoperations of previously implanted but worn or complicated prostheses. Such operations were carried out in Armenia for the first time within the framework of the Armenian-Finnish project.

The quality and technical standards of these procedures fully meet those of the Finnish clinic, while the cost and comfort level are significantly more accessible for patients.

Joint endoprosthesis replacement is a surgical procedure in which damaged joint surfaces are replaced with artificial implants replicating the anatomy and movement of a healthy joint. The goal of the operation is to eliminate pain and restore function. In many cases, it is the only effective way to regain mobility and improve the patient’s quality of life.

The clinic uses prostheses from leading global manufacturers that undergo multi-stage testing and international certification. The implants are made from high-strength stainless alloys and typically serve for 15–20 years, sometimes up to 30 years.

Joint replacement is indicated for:

  • degenerative-dystrophic diseases (osteoarthritis, arthritis),
  • ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew’s disease),
  • aseptic necrosis of the femoral head,
  • intra-articular fractures,
  • joint dysplasia,
  • femoral neck fractures, and others.

Absolute contraindications include severe cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases in the stage of decompensation, active purulent infections, mental or neuromuscular disorders, and active inflammation in the joint area.

Endoprosthesis replacement may be total (complete) or partial (unipolar) depending on the extent of joint damage.

Before surgery, patients undergo a thorough examination, including laboratory tests, imaging, and precise selection of the prosthesis model and size.

The surgeries are usually performed without complications. Most patients are able to stand up and walk within hours after the procedure and climb stairs the following day.

Early rehabilitation begins immediately after surgery under the supervision of physiotherapists from Nairi Medical Center, who received professional training at Coxa Clinic in Finland.

The innovative joint replacement techniques used at Coxa–Nairi Clinic ensure stable pain relief, rapid recovery of function, and help patients quickly return to an active and independent lifestyle.
