Diagnosis of Glaucoma at Nairi MC Ophthalmology Clinic
Glaucoma is a silent disease that usually affects both eyes, though not simultaneously. It develops gradually and unnoticed, often leading to late diagnosis.
Glaucoma is a chronic condition in which intraocular pressure rises due to impaired fluid outflow from the eye. Patients may not notice any vision problems for a long time, while the disease continues to progress and irreversibly damages the optic nerve. Over time, this results in irreversible vision loss, up to complete blindness.
At the Ophthalmology Clinic of Nairi Medical Center, the Glaucoma Diagnostic Unit offers patients the opportunity to:
- undergo comprehensive examinations to detect the disease at early stages,
- receive specialist consultation based on diagnostic findings,
- develop an individualized management program,
- determine a personalized treatment plan tailored to the course of the disease,
- receive necessary therapeutic laser treatment,
- assess the medical prognosis of the condition.
Diagnostic tests for glaucoma include:
- visual acuity testing (with autorefractometer and phoropter),
- tonometry by different methods (Maklakov, Goldman, pneumotonometry, Icare impression tonometry),
- gonioscopy with slit-lamp and modern contact lenses,
- ophthalmoscopy of the optic nerve and retinal fiber layer,
- optical coherence tomography (Cirrus HD-OCT),
- perimetry (Humphrey Field Analyzer),
- keratopachymetry (Alcon ultrasonic pachymeter, USA),
- A-scan ultrasound (Alcon, USA),
- Humphrey computerized diagnostics — the “gold standard” in glaucoma assessment,
- Ocular Blood Flow Analyzer (USA), the only device of its kind in Armenia, providing innovative evaluation of ocular blood flow.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is organized at the clinic.
With proper treatment, patients can live a full life. However, glaucoma requires continuous, lifelong therapy. The primary goal of treatment is to lower intraocular pressure. A wide range of treatment options are available: medical, laser, and surgical.
