Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy (Video)

22 Mar 2021

Nairi Medical Center now performs epilepsy surgeries, each of which is unique. The essence of the procedure is to remove the epileptogenic focus, but the main challenge lies in locating it. The epileptogenic focus does not differ visually from the other healthy parts of the brain, but it exhibits epileptic activity.

To address this, before surgery, ultra-thin electrodes are placed into the brain. These electrodes help to identify and record the epileptogenic focus through EEG monitoring, and then, using the same electrodes, without performing open surgery, the focus (approximately 1 cm in size) is ablated. This allows the patient to be freed from seizures or to significantly reduce their frequency and intensity for life, through a minimally invasive intervention.

As a result, patients avoid open brain surgery. This is one of the most advanced surgical methods today, made possible at Nairi Medical Center thanks to the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment — a process of continuous modernization
